Being a birth doula means more to me than just providing support before, during, and after your birth. I am deeply committed to addressing inequities in reproductive healthcare. As birth doulas and birth workers, we are often the first witnesses to coercion, white coat syndrome, obstetric violence, and racism within the birth space. It is crucial that we do not turn a blind eye to these issues.
Reproductive politics in the US are inherently gendered, sexualized, and racialized, perpetuating acts of dominance daily. My role as a birth doula is to educate and empower you to navigate and protect yourself from these challenges, regardless of your story, wishes, or family model.
I support ALL birth choices, including epidural and non-epidural options, hospital births, home births. Whatever your preferences, I will advocate for you, listen to you, respect every decision you make, provide unbiased information to facilitate informed consent, and support you every step of the way.
My doula practice is influenced by a feminist framework known as « Reproductive Justice.« Reproductive justice was coined by black women in the group « Women of African Descent for Reproductive Justice » in response to US reproductive politics that failed to address the needs of women of color and other marginalized groups. Its core values include the right to have a child, the right to not have a child, and the right to parent in safe and healthy environments.
As an ally, I uphold birthing persons’ human rights to lead fully self-determined lives without fear, discrimination, or retaliation.
